Queen’s University Belfast (informally Queen’s) is a public research university in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The university was chartered in 1845, and opened in 1849 as “Queen’s College, Belfast”. It became an autonomous constituent college of Victoria University in 1900. In 1920 the university’s name was changed to its English form, “Queen’s University of Belfast”, though its official title remains the former.
The university is associated with two Nobel laureates and one Turing Award laureate. Like many other institutions, it currently offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes and video-based online courses through MOOC platforms such as edX and FutureLearn.
Queen’s is located adjacent to the Botanic Gardens and within walking distance of Belfast city centre. The main campus covers 169 acres (68 ha), with a range of academic and residential buildings clustered around Queen’s Quadrangle.
